Artist Statement

Updated February 2026

My upbringing in Southern Appalachia surrounded by mountains, rivers, forests, and caverns gave me a deep sensitivity to the rhythms, patterns and surfaces of the natural world. These forms provide both a visual vocabulary and a conceptual framework through which I approach making.

Painting, drawing, and sculpture become sites of dialogue between material and image, where surfaces are built, eroded, and re-formed in ways that parallel natural processes. Water erodes stone to carve canyons; minerals drip and accumulate to form stalagmites. In much the same way, the pressures and currents of lived experience shape personal identity over time. Imagery drawn from the natural world—ranging from vast forests and caverns to intimate details like bug trails and bird bones—is synthesized with internal research rooted in memory, emotion, and personal narrative.

As the world becomes increasingly digital and disembodied, my practice clings to the tangibility of texture, emphasizing the slow, tactile processes of erosion, accumulation, and transformation. Materials and imagery derived from nature form the structural and conceptual foundation of the work, allowing internal and external landscapes to merge through surface, process, and form.

I am currently pursuing my MFA in Painting and Drawing at the University of Iowa.

Current Research Interests: dendritic and fractal patterns in nature, Queer Ecology
