Scarring

2023-2026

“Scarring” is a body of work that explores sensory experience and humanity’s deep-rooted connection to the natural world, challenging the belief that we exist separately from or above the ecosystems we inhabit. Through imagery of trees, rock formations, and abstracted symbols of home and humanity, the work reflects on resilience, growth, and the parallels between human life and the natural environment. The collection places strong emphasis on texture and materiality, incorporating elements such as sand, aged copper, and pumice. Pumice is one of the most important mediums in this body of work, utilized either as positive or carved line work; it is reminiscent of scarring, rough tissue that disrupts or reinforces the image plane. Familiar forms offer moments of comfort and recognition, while abstraction and unconventional materials encourage reflection on decay, transformation, and the enduring power of nature.
